Good effort and Calhoun's on-air post-game comments

I also applaud the way the team played. There were numerous times when it looked like we were on the verge of getting blown out and then fought back to make it a highly competitive game. A little bit better play and better decisions during the last two minutes of the game would have gotten it done. Our last offensive possession left a lot to be desired....with twenty-five seconds left, we could and should have gotten a better shot off (alhough I thought Ashanti was huge all game--there were three or four critical junctures during the game where he hit a big shot to keep us in it).

Did any catch Calhoun's on-air comments right after the game ended?

At first he seemed highly complimentary of Georgetown and critical of his own team when he said something to the effect of he didn't think the team that put out the better effort won the game.

He then continued (and I'm paraphrasing here) and essentially said the only reason the game was close was because UConn played so poorly, which was a real slap to our team and the effort we brought to the table tonight.

Did anyone else have the same reaction to his comments? I sort of felt like he was subtely putting us down without directly saying so.

Agree w/ IPB and Diamond. Good effort all around. No reason for heads to be hung low after the game. Sure the dribble off Cook's foot was a blunder and the last shot wasn't exactly the one I would have gone for. But, aside from that, I give them a lot of credit for sticking in there. Call it UConn playing poorly, but the game score and pace seemed to point to good defense on our part.

I for one expected an ass whuppin from UConn and I think UConn escaped by pure luck. Having said that, I do think that the remaining games in the tournament should prove interesting.

Does this mean WVU gets an at large bid?

What Calhoun said was his team played the worse they've played in the last 10 games (all of which they've won). He also said that the team that won wasn't the team that played the hardest. I don't think that was a slight. UConn is waaaay more talented than GU. I think that is all he meant.

Calhoun's post game comments from WashTimes:

"I sincerely want to congratulate Georgetown," said Connecticut's Jim Calhoun after watching his Huskies (22-6) scrape out a seventh straight victory. "If they make a 3-pointer at the end, we're going home. We played 28 games this season, and they shot the highest percentage (48.0) of anybody against us tonight -- better than Carolina, Oklahoma or anybody.
"The NCAA tournament is always looking for teams who would be a tough out, and I hope they take that into consideration when they evaluate Georgetown, because they would be a very, very tough out. ... I'm not sure that the team that played the hardest won tonight."

I was very happy with the performance. Sure we lost. Sure we made some mistakes down the strech. And sure this means we're heading to the NIT (http://sports.espn.go.com/ncb/news/story?page=2005bubblewatch ). But I don't think we have anything to be disappointed about.

Calhoun is right, UConn did not play a good game. Villanueva should have been absolutely DOMINANT inside, and he wasn't really.

But the Hoyas did a good job. They shot the ball well. Ashanti showed up in a big way and, though I might be in the minority, I didn't have any problem with the last shot. Sure Green was open, but the Hoyas aren't really used to making splint second decisions. The time was winding down and Cook had to make a move fast. He made his choice, and the fade away gave him some separation from his defender. It was a good look...I just wish it had fallen.

I was also happy to see that GU got some good press out of it. I don't know if anyone watched Sportcenter last night, but Reed's behind the head pass to Bowman for a dunk was a top play nominee. It was a pretty dish and I was happy to see it get some recognition.

We're a young team. With next year's talent upgrade I think we are going to be a team to contend with.

Speaking of talent upgrade . . . . Brandon Rush, the #4 recruit in the nation, has scheduled a visit for the Hilltop. He will also be visiting UNLV and Oklahoma. This is a very interesting development. Rush wasn't recruited by anyone until recently because it was widely thought that he would go to the NBA. However, he has decided that a year or two in college would help his game and improve his stock. I think his list of schools is telling. Either UNC and Illinois (both of whom were recruiting him) backed off because they don't want a one and done player, or he is looking for instant PT and major press coverage. Either way, GU is a great fit in the New Big East with a new coach and a number of talented players, but no superstars. If JTIII can reel this guy it, it will be a major major achievement and will put us back on the map in a big way. You don't want to fill a team with these types of players but think of the role AI players at GU, what Stevie Francis did at UMD, or even Carmello at Cuse. Like UMD, in particular, this could announce GU's reemergence.
