Win is a Win
I know a win is a win & at this juncture a conference win is big, but the final score seemed much closer than it should have been. Any particular reason the ND game was a squeaker?
That said, Notre Dame is one of the best shooting teams in college basketball. They don't do much else but those Indiana boys can shoot. They got hot in the second half and we got visibly tired -- probably the result of the Duke game and such a short break between contests. Luckily we don't play again until Saturday. Big win for the program. A win against Cinci would really solidify our standing.
Tell me this is not a shot at Clipboard Craig from Owens:
"It's just learning experiences that kind of helps you in the next game," Owens said of the close win. "We have senior leadership on the team. A couple of years back, I don't know what would've happened in that situation. We have a lot of guys that know what it takes to win, and that starts with the coach."
The only reason the game went to double overtime is because Brandon Bowman committed perhaps the stupidest foul in the history of college basketball.
As I'm sure you all have read by now, we were up 4 with 1.8 seconds remaining when Bowman decides to foul a desperation three-point attempt by ND. Of course the ND player hits the shot and makes the foul shot. Game tied, goes to overtime, and luckily we prevail in the second OT.
This guy is a ticking time bomb on the court. I may go to graduation this year to celebrate his departure.
Can you imagine if it were the Sweet 16 and he pulled a play like that against a better team and we lost!
Btw, Roy Hibbert almost single-handedly won the game for us last evening. His play down the stretch was stellar. He just needs to learn to never leave the paint on D. I have no idea why he chases the other team's center to the three point line. The bigs from other teams are no threat from that range.
Great comment on the Bowman foul from the ESPN article:
"GU survived a bonehead foul that allowed Notre Dame to force overtime with a four-point play." Article later comments that Bowman felft bad about the play.
I didn't realize that this had happened till IPB's post. I would agree on the stupidity & futility of the play. Sort of reminds me of Leon Lett tackling his teammate & causing his own team to fumble in the endzone a few years back.
This was definitely a case of Bad Brandon. The stupid foul aside, he also had about a million turnovers. I haven't seen his game stats yet, but I watched the first half on line and it seemed like every other play was a Bowman turnover.
In other news, I was glad to see that Roy was a factor in this one. I hope he keeps it up as we come down the stretch in Big East play. I was also happy to see the scoring well-distributed. I think that is the real key to our success. Both the our style of play and the personnel we've assembled are designed to forment a well-balanced attack. I think we've seen that in the last two games.
PS - Did you guys catch the highlights from USF v. Nova? South Florida did an outstanding job with their shot blocking.
USF may not have been the abysmal performance we thought. They seem to play everyone close. Hopefully they keep losing so they are demoralized for the last game of the season down in Florida.
