Wormley Sold

According to the Post GU got $8+ for it. It was purchased in 1997 for $1.5. That's a tidy profit but I'd rather have the property.

Three questions:

1) How did the Post categorize the sale?

2) Who did they sell to? and

3) When does your clerkship end and what are you doing when it does?

fourth question:

did we ever do anything with it?

1)& 2)"Georgetown University sold the Wormley School, at 3325 Prospect St. NW, to Encore Development Corp. of Bethesda for more than $8 million last week.

University spokeswoman Laura Cavender said the school was put on the market earlier this year after it was determined that the site could not be developed for academic or administrative purposes because of a "lack of philanthropic support" and "community issues." The university bought the building in 1998 from the D.C. public school system.

Wormley originally served as a black elementary school in the days of segregation. It was named in honor of James Wormley, a local black hotelier.

Gary A. Kirstein, president of Encore Development, said his firm plans to build condominiums in the school and townhouses in open space, including the school's former playground."

3) Early September
4) Nope. GPPI has moved into the Car Barn which will be vacated once the new B-school building is built.

Selling Wormley is a shame and incredibly myopic--one of the worst decisions the school has made. A prime piece of real estate now gone. At least we didn't give it away like Mt. St. Mary's, but I guarantee the University will regret this at some point. Throwing up your hands and constantly pointing to the ANC as the reason why the University was never able to utilize the space is shameful. GU definitely suffers from lack of creativity at the top. If GU can't outmaneuver dodos like Westy Byrd (I don't think she's around anymore but you get the point), then something is wrong.

I can tell you with 100% certainty that President Trachtenburg (sp.?) of GW would never have done this. I keep saying GU and GW should swap Presidents. This is yet one other area where GW has now outpaced Georgetown. I kept thinking it would be funny if GW had bought Wormley.
