Week 5 Rankings

Though I knew we would not be ranked in the top 25, I was sad to see that Georgetown did not--unlike in the previous weeks' rankings--get any votes for inclusion in the top 25.

Yeah, that's strange. We lost to a team that will probably be top 25 next week and beat another very good team on its home court. But, at this stage, rankings are all about expectations. We haven't been good the last few years so unless we make some noise, we won't get any attention. Also, there is something strange about dropping in the rankings when you lose to a team that is ranked higher. Okla lost to a team ranked higher than it (Nova) on Nova's home court. Why did it drop 5 places in the rankings? If the rankings were correct, doesn't that mean they should have lost?

I agree with Diamond's comments that rankings at this juncture are pretty meaningless. On Selection Sunday, nobody is pinning their case on the fact that they were in the Top 25 or got votes during the first 5 weeks. I would argue that rankings are not a valid indicator until early / mid January once teams play their real non-conference games & begin conference play.

I also agree that expectations play a role in rankings early on; however, the fact that Bucknell is knocking on the top 25 door & schools like hawaii or iona are getting votes & we are not shouldn't be read as the expectation that these teams are expected to perform better than the hoyas. These schools, if in the tournament are there b/c of winning conference tournaments. I think we'd all be pretty miffed if a couple of months from now GU is passed over for the likes of Iona.
